21 Bathroom ideas with good dimensions

Bathrooms rank second only to kitchens when it comes to prioritizing layouts and finishes, and limited space doesn’t have to compromise the quality of their design. Understanding standard bathroom dimensions and typical fixture sizes allows you to transform these personal spaces into unique and delightful areas.

The most popular bathroom design is the single-plumbed wall layout. In this setup, all fixtures are aligned along one wall, simplifying plumbing by consolidating drains, water supply lines, and venting. This arrangement not only reduces installation costs but also ensures efficient hot water distribution, particularly when the wall is positioned close to the water heater.

For such walls, it's essential to use 90 x 45-millimetre studs instead of the standard 90 x 35-millimetre ones, primarily to accommodate the larger plumbing requirements for toilets. Even if you have a spacious ensuite, there’s likely at least one other bathroom in the house using this practical configuration.

Here’s a quick guide to standard bathroom fixture dimensions to help with planning:

  • Single sinks: A minimum width of 600 millimetres is required for comfortable use, though 900 millimetres is ideal.
  • Double sinks: While two sinks can fit within a width of 1500 millimetres (or even a tight 1200 millimetres), 1800 millimetres or more is preferred for a more spacious feel.
  • Bathtubs: Standard bathtubs typically measure between 1500 and 1650 or 1700 millimetres in length and about 750 millimetres in width. Depths vary from as shallow as 350 millimetres to as deep as 500 millimetres, with many stunning designs offering unique dimensions.
  • Toilets: Ensure at least 700 millimetres of clear space in front of the toilet for comfortable use, along with 200 millimetres of clearance on each side.
  • Showers: The minimum shower space is 900 x 900 millimetres, but larger setups are often preferred for added comfort. Some families even opt for dual-shower designs for extra functionality.
